![]() Lines from your dispatcher throughout the game ooze that late-stage capitalist attitude that could only come from a bloated, corrupt corporation. ![]() The style is clear even beyond the art direction, as illustrated through the phenomenal voice acting and writing. Nowhere else does it make complete sense to see a specialized drilling rocket, holographic projections, advanced tool/weapon stations, and a bar complete with a jukebox in the same place. The rig is the perfect marrying of the stereotypical fantasy dwarf and the advanced tech of the space age. A full team of virtually any combination of the four classes–Gunner, Scout, Engineer, or Driller–makes for a fantastically fun experience you can play again and again. The game is enjoyable alone with the assistance of a flying helper bot named Bosco, but I cannot stress enough how much more fun it is to play this game with friends. The characters you play feel fleshed out and fun to engage with, and the effort to make sure they synergize with each other in an abundance of ways is evident almost immediately. Stellar visuals further enhance this already excellent gameplay, with highly developed styles for each of the four classes. Quick feet and quicker pickaxes will spell victory for intrepid dwarves seeking glory in Karl’s name deep below the hostile planet’s surface. A fair variety of insect-like creatures, most of which are arachnoid, will seek you out in a frenzy of violent swarming. Speaking of which, while you explore and gather you will be under constant assault by the dominant species of Hoxxes IV–the bugs. Primary objectives always consist of gathering something the corporation values while secondary objectives sometimes veer into biomatter collection for them to study, presumably so they can improve their ability to decimate hostile creatures native to the planet. Each biome has good and bad characteristics unique to them, and you must navigate your way through the procedurally generated cave you drill into to complete a primary and secondary objective. The composition of the title’s main gameplay loop starts with you launching from your base into one of ten distinct biomes. There is a lot to say about Deep Rock Galactic and it's nearly all good, making it difficult to pick a single point to begin describing this stellar Co-Op Shooter but here is my best effort. Armed with a variety of tools and weapons, the dwarves descend the depths in search of precious minerals to fill their coffers. Only one group in the universe is properly equipped, both to do battle with the wildlife and to harvest the tidally locked world of its riches the dwarves of the mining corporation Deep Rock Galactic. If one can brave all of these dangers and many more, a treasure trove of resources sits ready to be mined. Amidst its myriad biomes swirl seas of sand, spikes of radiation, subterranean storms, and roving groups of killer bugs ready to rip invaders limb from limb. Orbiting the star Creus, Hoxxes IV is known as one of the most inhospitable environments in the entire galaxy. Now let’s talk about a game infinitely better than that steaming pile of bug-ridden trash masquerading as gameplay– Deep Rock Galactic. It features all the major problems the game shipped with and serves as a great time capsule, showing you who shilled on the company’s behalf through the review embargo and who refused to play ball. I would highly recommend watching a video by YouTuber crowbat entitled “overpromise, sell, underdeliver Cyberpunk 2077” published about a month after the game came out. They took advantage of the goodwill and trust of the gaming community for a payout. The time leading up to the game's release was littered with shady, underhanded tactics that painted both the company and the people endorsing them in the worst possible light. ![]() I should preface this piece by saying that not only is Cyberpunk 2077 a garbage product for which I carry much enmity, but I also have a deep disdain for CD Projekt Red. There is no better example of irony than this game being overlooked for the Labor of Love award in favor of Cyberpunk 2077, the complete antithesis of all those positive characteristics. The next entry in my series of overlooked games is a fantastic title with a dedicated staff, regular content updates, and a constant commitment to high-quality. ![]()
